FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Please reach us at 240-428-1392 if you cannot find an answer to your question.

Do I need to purchase Auto Insurance?
Yes. In the state of Maryland, you are required to have Auto Insurance to purchase license plates for your vehicle. All vehicles MUST be insured at ALL times to avoid any fines or penalties from the MVA. The minimum coverage required by law is:
  • $30,000 for bodily injury
  • $60,000 for bodily injury per accident
  • $15,000 for property damage
When can I cancel my Auto Insurance?

If you purchased insurance with a different Insurance Company or Agent we will need proof of insurance and a siged cancellation request form to cancel your insurance. If you did not purchased insurance elsewhere, you will need to return your license plates to the MVA or a Tag and Title office. We can cancel your insurance as soon as we receive a copy of the tag return receipt.

How much is the MVA fine if my policy cancels and I haven't returned my tags?

The MVA will fine you $200 for the first 30 days and $7 for each additional day, up to an annual maximum of $3,500 per vehicle. If you received a letter from the MVA about your insurance lapse and continue to drive uninsured, your license plates will get suspended.

**REMEMBER, IT IS AGAINST THE LAW TO DRIVE UNINSURED!

Why do I have an insurance flag if I dont have a lapse in coverage?

A vehicle insurance flag could be placed on your record for a number of reasons, including:

    • You purchased a new insurance policy with a different Agent or Insurance Company.
    • Your policy cancelled/lapsed for non-payment and was later reinstated with no lapse in coverage.

To remove an insurance flag we will need to issue a new FR-19 with the case number assigned to your vehicle. If you do not have the case number you can call or visit your local MVA office. We cannot issue an FR-19 without your case number.

    What is an FR-19?

Maryland Vehicle Insurance Certification (form #FR-19) is used to provide verification of vehicle insurance. The form can only be issued by a vehicle insurance company licensed to do business in Maryland or an authorized agent.
